Southern Redbelly Dace: A Seclusive Beauty In Peril
The southern redbelly dace, Phoxinus erythrogaster, is a secretive yet beautiful minnow inhabiting clear, cold headwater streams in the southeastern United States. Its distinctive coloration, with a vibrant reddish-orange belly, sets it apart from other minnows. Adapted for fast-flowing streams, it thrives in habitats with rocky bottoms, riffles, and abundant aquatic vegetation, feeding on a diet of insects, larvae, and algae. Unfortunately, the southern redbelly dace is facing conservation concerns due to habitat loss and degradation.
