Eurasian Red Squirrels: Conservation, Diet, Behavior, And Habitat
Eurasian red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris) are agile tree-dwelling rodents found in coniferous, deciduous, and mixed forests across Eurasia. They possess a distinctive rusty-red fur, white underparts, and a bushy tail. Active climbers and jumpers, these solitary animals feed on nuts, seeds, fruits, insects, and small vertebrates. They are also notable for their nest-building behaviors and anti-predator strategies, such as vigilance and using trees for cover. Despite their “Least Concern” IUCN status, local populations may face threats from hunting, habitat loss, and climate change, warranting conservation efforts.
